More About Glastonbury, Connecticut

Glastonbury is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States, formally founded in 1693 and first settled in 1636. The town was named after Glastonbury in Somerset, England.[2] Glastonbury is located on the banks of the Connecticut River, 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Hartford. The town center is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census-designated place (CDP). The population was 35,159 at the 2020 census.[1]

In 1636, 30 families were settled in Pyaug, a tract of land belonging to Wethersfield on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River, bought from the Native American chief Sowheag for 12 yards (11 m) of trading cloth. In 1672, Wethersfield and Hartford were granted permission by the General Court to extend the boundary line of Pyaug 5 miles (8 km) to the east. By 1690, residents of Pyaug had gained permission from Wethersfield to become a separate town and, in 1693, the town of Glassenbury was created.[3]

Imprinting Good Behavior ~Birth to 16 Weeks
Getting your puppy from the breeder

Training starts the instant a new puppy is in our hands in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Once we choose the puppy from the litter, the first thing we want to achieve is developing confidence and a bond with this new puppy. We begin our relationship having fun even though we’re always teaching. Under our close guidance, we start exposing the puppy to its new world. For example, getting him or her to follow us, climb stairs, walk over logs, and even get relatively close to loud noises. By doing this, we are environmentally socializing your dog to the world while at the same time enhancing our bond. We are huge dog lovers, yet incredibly aware in those moments it is imperative to concentrate more on being a leader and guide as the new pup discovers this new world without the presence of its litter mates or mom.

Crucial time for learning
In the initial few weeks we are teaching your new puppy boundaries, trust and focus. There is no restriction as to what we may incorporate into our techniques. Frequently we use particular spots or objects to create an encounter for the pup. In some cases a spur of the moment opportunity may present itself in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Our decisions and creativity are endless. Every exposure and experience builds on the previous one. Through all of this, we very closely monitor the puppy. We never confine ourselves to inflexible rules. We try to get more creative, think outside the box, and make use of occasions that unfold before us. Those opportunities are priceless when it comes to teaching the pup.

Every interaction with the new puppy is a teaching moment. We often consider it as an early investment in the life of this pup. This is the first time away from his or her littermates and staying with us in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Puppies have a small window of time during brain development when they are most impressionable. This is called the imprinting also known as the critical learning period. Puppies learn more during this period than any other period of time in their lives. The quality and quantity of what they experience will have a substantial effect on their future personalities and determine a lot of their “good” or “bad” behavior tendencies. During the course of the imprinting period, every experience is critical. It is essential to build their self-confidence. The expression ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ does not apply to their early interactions. Because puppies are soaking up every experience like a sponge, we need to stay very aware of all interactions and yet still have a good time with our new pup.

A Well-Mannered Friend
4 to 6 months

A trained puppy is so much more than just obedient. Knowing how to sit, stay or walk nicely on a loose leash are necessary things to learn. Good manners, great social skills and a healthy relationship with his or her family are critical. Furthermore, desensitization, exposure to various distractions and situations, in addition to being comfortable to fit into a lifestyle in Glastonbury, CT  is equally important.

Our focus is to create a puppy with remarkable manners and social skills. We begin by teaching obedience the day we bring them home from the breeder; which continues as we fine-tune the dog’s behavior. The goal is to have a strong foundation by about 4 to 6 months. We practice obedience, keeping it a standard request in our daily routine as well as within each new situation we expose your dog to. We move from shaping to formalizing commands and proofing them with distractions, duration and distance. Communication is at the core of our philosophy. Being clear and consistent is key. We limit our words when giving commands. We want your dog to understand what we want when we give them the command. When we say ‘come’ or ‘here’ we expect 100% response right away.

Proofing Behavior in a Social World in Glastonbury, CT
6 months to young adult

Enter the teenage years– adolescence. This is the usual age when many dogs are re-homed or given up to animal shelters. The adolescent stage can find your sweet pup turning into a monster. That nice pup can be more mouthy and disobedient than you could ever think of. Many owners hope their canine will grow out of undesirable behaviors. Their dog is testing what is allowed and what is not. Allowing a dog to continue practicing naughty acts makes changing undesirable behavior more challenging.

Working in the Real World in Glastonbury, Connecticut Puppies for sale near me Glastonbury
We work to prevent any unwanted behavior by instilling boundaries and practicing obedience in high distraction areas. For example, we practice recalls when your dog is extremely distracted possibly chasing something as common as a squirrel. We test and proof obedience in high traffic areas, around barking dogs, around playgrounds and within public places.

As the dog moves through the adolescent stage we continue to challenge the dog by putting him or her in various scenarios. We think of each situation as a picture. How does that look like to the dog? How does that picture differ from day to day or location to location. We are striving to teach a dog how to adapt in each new and different environment or scenario. We are raising a dog that isn’t reliant on continuous commands that control what he or she should and should not do. In fact, we prefer a dog that can make great decisions. Our top goal is to have a well-balanced dog, who will fit into your home.

We continue to reinforce and improve good manners making good behavior a habit for the dog. Throughout this time, the puppy has been staying with the dog trainer in his or her individual home. During this time, your puppy will also spend a few days and nights hanging out with another loved one or friend. Providing them with this chance, encourages your puppy to continue to be confident and comfortable in brand-new surroundings. This makes sure those habits and good manners will remain when he/she goes on to your house in Glastonbury, CT.
