More About Deerfield, Illinois

Deerfield is a north shore suburb of Chicago in Lake County, Illinois, United States, approximately 25 miles north of Chicago with a small portion extending into Cook County, Illinois. The population was 19,196 at the 2020 census.[2] Deerfield is home to the headquarters of Walgreens Boots Alliance, Baxter Healthcare, Caterpillar Inc., and Fortune Brands Home & Security. Deerfield is often listed among some of the wealthiest and highest earning places in Illinois and the Midwest. The per capita income of the village is $68,101 and the median household income is $143,729.[3]

Originally populated by the Bodéwadmiakiwen (Potawatomi), Myaamia (Miami), Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Peoria, and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Oglala Sioux) Native Americans,[4] the area was settled by Horace Lamb and Jacob B. Cadwell in 1835 and named Cadwell’s Corner. A shopping center located on the site of Cadwell’s farm at Waukegan Road and Lake Cook Road still bears that name. The area grew because of the navigable rivers in the area, notably the Des Plaines River and the Chicago River. By 1840, the town’s name was changed to “Leclair”. Within a decade, settler John Millen proposed a further name change to “Deerfield” in honor of his hometown, Deerfield, Massachusetts and the large number of deer living in the area. At the time, the alternate name for the village on the ballot was “Erin”. “Deerfield” won by a vote of 17–13.[5] The village’s first school, Wilmot School, was founded in 1847. Originally a one-room schoolhouse, Wilmot is now an elementary school which serves 548 students. It is located on land donated by Lyman Wilmot, whose wife, Clarissa, was the village’s first school teacher.[5] The village was incorporated in 1903[6] with a population in the low 400s.

The Puppy‘s Training in Deerfield, Illinois
Training your pup is a combo of teaching new skill-sets including manners, setting boundaries, encouraging healthy relationships, along with exposing your dog successfully to people, other dogs and desensitizing him or her to all types of environments. For example, we have the pup sleep overnight with various people in various environments; which develops a dog for you who is relaxed and easy to live with because he or she can easily adapt|adjusts} to your lifestyle. As a result of this and exposures to other variables your dog readily bonds with you and your family members.

Imprinting Good Behavior ~Birth to 16 Weeks
Picking up your puppy from the breeder

Training starts the moment a new puppy is in our care in Deerfield, Illinois. Once we choose the puppy from the litter, the first thing we want to accomplish is building confidence and a bond with this new puppy. We begin our relationship having fun even though we’re always teaching. Under our close guidance, we start exposing the pup to its new world. For example, getting him or her to follow us, climb stairs, walk over logs, and maybe even get relatively near to loud noises. By doing this, we are environmentally socializing your dog to the world while enhancing our bond. We are huge dog lovers, yet extremely aware in those moments it is essential to focus more on being a leader and guide as the new pup discovers this new world without the presence of its litter mates or mom.

Crucial time for learning
In the initial few weeks we are teaching your new puppy boundaries, trust and focus. There is no limit as to what we will integrate into our strategies. Frequently we make use of certain areas or objects to create an encounter for the puppy. Sometimes a spur of the moment opportunity may present itself in Deerfield, Illinois. Our choices and imagination are unlimited. Every exposure and experience builds upon the last one. Through all of this, we very closely monitor the puppy. We never confine ourselves to rigid rules. We try to get more creative, think outside the box, and make use of activities that manifest before us. Those opportunities are invaluable when it comes down to teaching the puppy.

Every interaction with the new pup is a teaching moment. We like to think of it as an early investment in the life of this pup. This is the first time away from his or her littermates and staying with us in Deerfield, Illinois. Puppies have a small window of time during brain development when they are most impressionable. This is called the imprinting also known as the critical learning period. Puppies learn more during this period than they can learn in a lifetime. The quality and quantity of what they encounter will have a huge influence on their future personalities and decide a lot of their “good” or “bad” behavior tendencies. Throughout the imprinting period, every experience is critical. It is important to build their self-confidence. The expression ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ does not apply to their early interactions. Because puppies are absorbing every experience like a sponge, we must stay very aware of all interactions and yet still have a good time with our new puppy.

A Well-Mannered Friend
4 to 6 months

A trained dog is much more than just obedient. Knowing how to sit, stay or walk nicely on a loose leash are important things to learn. Good manners, great social skills and a healthy relationship with his or her family are important. In addition, desensitization, exposure to various distractions and situations, in addition to having the flexibility to fit into a lifestyle in Deerfield, IL  is equally important.

Our focus is to create a dog with impeccable manners and social skills. We start by teaching obedience the day we bring them home from the breeder; which carries on as we refine the dog’s behavior. The goal is to have a strong foundation by about 4 to 6 months. We practice obedience, keeping it a regular request in our daily routine in addition to within each new situation we expose your dog to. We go from shaping to formalizing commands and testing them with distractions, duration and distance. Communication is at the core of our philosophy. Being very clear and consistent is key. We limit our words when giving commands. We want your dog to understand what we mean when we give them the command. When we say ‘come’ or ‘here’ we expect 100% response right away.

Proofing Behavior in a Social World in Deerfield, IL
6 months to young adult

Enter the teenage years– adolescence. This is the typical age when many dogs are re-homed or surrendered to animal shelters. The adolescent stage can find your sweet pup becoming a monster. That nice puppy can be more mouthy and disobedient than you could ever envision. Many owners hope their canine will grow out of unfavorable behaviors. Their dog is testing what is permitted and what is not. Allowing a dog to continue practicing naughty acts makes changing unwanted behavior more challenging.

Working in the Real World in Deerfield, Illinois Puppies for sale near me Deerfield
We work to prevent any unwanted behavior by instilling boundaries and practicing obedience in high distraction areas. For instance, we practice recalls when your dog is very distracted perhaps chasing something as common as a squirrel. We test and proof obedience in high traffic places, around barking dogs, around playgrounds and within public places.

As the dog goes through the adolescent stage we continue to challenge the dog by putting it in various scenarios. We consider each situation as a picture. What does that look like to the puppy? How does that picture change from day to day or location to location. We are striving to teach a dog how to adapt in every new and different setting or scenario. We are raising a puppy that isn’t depending on continual commands that dictate what he or she should and should not do. In fact, we prefer a dog that can make great decisions. Our number one priority is to have a well-balanced dog, who will be comfortable your home.

We continue to reinforce and refine manners making good behavior a habit for the dog. During this time, the puppy has been living with the dog trainer in his/her individual home. Throughout this time, your puppy will also spend a few days and nights hanging out with another family member or close friend. Providing the dog with this chance, encourages your dog to continue to be confident and comfortable in new surroundings. This makes sure those habits and good manners will stay when he moves in to your house in Deerfield, IL.
