More About Walpole, Massachusetts

Walpole is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. Walpole Town, as the Census refers to it, is located about 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown Boston and 30 miles (48 km) north of Providence, Rhode Island. The population of Walpole was 26,383 at the 2020 census.[1] Walpole was first settled in 1659 and was considered a part of Dedham until officially incorporated in 1724. The town was named after Sir Robert Walpole, de facto first Prime Minister of Great Britain. It also encompasses the entirely distinct entity of Walpole (CDP), with its much smaller area of 2.9 square miles.[2]

It started out as a territory that was claimed by the Neponset Native American tribe.[3] The Neponset tribe officially claimed the area that is now Walpole, and some of its surrounding territory, in 1635. The town of Dedham was not included in this claim, so they began to negotiate with the Neponset tribe to gain land. In 1636, a deal was made between the town of Dedham and the Neponsets to grant Dedham lands that now comprise the towns of Walpole, Norwood, Westwood, Medfield, Norfolk and Dover as well as Dedham. The land given to Dedham in this deal currently includes parts of 16 different towns.[3]

Imprinting Good Behavior ~Birth to 16 Weeks
Getting your puppy from the breeder

Training starts the moment a new puppy is in our care in Walpole, Massachusetts. Once we decide on the pup from the litter, the very first thing we want to achieve is developing confidence and a bond with this new puppy. We start our relationship having fun even though we’re always teaching. Under our close guidance, we begin exposing the puppy to its new world. For instance, getting him or her to follow us, go up and down stairs, walk over various things, and also get somewhat close to loud noises. By doing this, we are environmentally socializing your puppy to the world while building up our bond. We are huge dog lovers, but still remarkably aware in those moments it is essential to concentrate more on being a leader and guide as the new puppy discovers this new world without having the company of its litter mates or mom.

The Essential time for learning
In the first few weeks we are teaching your new puppy boundaries, trust and focus. There is no limit as to what we may incorporate into our approaches. Often we use certain places or objects to create an experience for the pup. At times a spur of the moment opportunity may present itself in Walpole, Massachusetts. Our decisions and creativity are unlimited. Every exposure and experience builds upon the previous one. Through all of this, we very closely observe the puppy. We do not restrict ourselves to stiff rules. We try to get more creative, think outside the box, and benefit from events that manifest before us. Those opportunities are priceless when it comes down to teaching the puppy.

Every interaction with the new pup is a teaching moment. We often consider it as an early investment in the life of this puppy. This is the first time away from his or her littermates and living with us in Walpole, Massachusetts. Puppies have a small window of time during brain development when they are most impressionable. This is called the imprinting also known as the critical learning period. Puppies learn more during this time than any other period of time in their lives. The quality and quantity of what they encounter will have a significant effect on their future personalities and determine much of their “good” or “bad” behavior tendencies. During the imprinting phase, every experience is important. It is important to build their self-confidence. The phrase ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ does not apply to their early interactions. Because puppies are taking in every experience like a sponge, we must stay very aware of all interactions and yet still have a good time with our new pup.

A Well-Mannered Pal
4 to 6 months

A well-trained puppy is a lot more than just obedient. Knowing how to sit, stay or walk nicely on a loose leash are very important things to learn. Good manners, great social skills and a healthy relationship with his or her family are extremely important. In addition, desensitization, exposure to various distractions and situations, in addition to being comfortable to fit into a lifestyle in Walpole, MA  is equally important.

Our focus is to raise a dog with impeccable manners and social skills. We start by teaching obedience the day we bring them home from the breeder; which continues as we improve the dog’s behavior. The goal is to have a strong foundation by about 4 to 6 months. We practice obedience, keeping it a regular request in our day-to-day routine in addition to within each new situation we expose your dog to. We move from shaping to defining commands and proofing them with distractions, duration and distance. Communication is at the core of our philosophy. Being clear and consistent is key. We limit our words when giving commands. We want your dog to understand what we want when we give them the command. When we say ‘come’ or ‘here’ we expect 100% response immediately.

Proofing Behavior in a Social World in Walpole, MA
6 months to young adult

Enter the teenage years– adolescence. This is the normal age when many dogs are re-homed or given up to rescues. The adolescent stage can find your sweet pup developing into a monster. That nice pup can be more mouthy and disobedient than you could ever envision. Many owners hope their puppy will grow out of undesirable behaviors. Their dog is testing what is permitted and what is not. Allowing a dog to continue practicing naughty acts makes changing undesirable behavior more difficult.

Working in the Real World in Walpole, Massachusetts Puppies for sale near me Walpole
We work to reduce any unwanted behavior by instilling boundaries and practicing obedience in high distraction locations. Such as, we practice recalls when your dog is extremely distracted perhaps chasing something like a squirrel. We practice and proof obedience in high traffic places, around barking dogs, around playgrounds and within public places.

As the puppy moves through the adolescent stage we continue to challenge the dog by putting it in various scenarios. We imagine each situation as a picture. How does that look like to the dog? How does that picture shift from day to day or location to location. We are striving to teach a dog how to adapt in each new and various environment or situation. We are raising a dog that isn’t reliant on continuous commands that determine what he or she should and should not do. Instead, we prefer a dog that can make good choices. Our top priority is to have a well-balanced dog, who will fit into your home.

We continue to strengthen and improve manners making good behavior a habit for the dog. During this time, the dog has been living with the dog trainer in their individual home. During this time, your puppy will also spend a few days and nights hanging out with another family member or friend. Providing the dog with this opportunity, encourages your dog to continue to be confident and comfortable in different settings. This makes sure those habits and good manners will stay when he/she moves on to your home in Walpole, MA.
