More About Lexington, Massachusetts

Lexington is a suburban town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is 10 miles (16 km) from Downtown Boston. The population was 34,454 as of the 2020 census.[1] First settled by Europeans in 1641 as a farming community, it is well known as the site of the first shots of the American Revolutionary War, in the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775. It is home to Minute Man National Historical Park.

Native Americans inhabited the area that would become Lexington for thousands of years prior to European colonization of the Americas, as attested by a woodland era archaeological site near Loring Hill south of the town center.[2] At the time of European contact and exploration, the area may have been a border region between Naumkeag or Pawtucket to the northeast, Massachusett to the south, and Nipmuc to the west, though the land was eventually purchased from the Naumkeag.[2][3][4][5] The contact period introduced a number of European infectious diseases which would decimate native populations in virgin soil epidemics, leaving the area largely uncontested upon the arrival of large groups of English settlers in the Puritan Great Migration. In 1639, the Massachusetts General Court purchased the land that would become present day Lexington, then within the boundaries of Cambridge, from the Naumkeag Squaw Sachem of Mistick.[5]

Training your dog is a combination of teaching new skills including manners, setting boundaries, nurturing healthy relationships, together with exposing your puppy successfully to people, other dogs and desensitizing him or her to all different types of environments. For example, we have the puppy sleep overnight with various people in different settings; which produces a dog for you who is relaxed and easy to live with because he or she adapts|adjusts} to your way of life. As a result of this and exposures to other variables your dog readily bonds with you and your family members.

Imprinting Good Behavior ~Birth to 16 Weeks
Getting your puppy from the breeder

Training starts the moment a new puppy is in our hands in Lexington, Massachusetts. Once we decide on the pup from the litter, the first thing we want to achieve is building confidence and a bond with this new puppy. We start our relationship having fun even though we’re always teaching. Under our close guidance, we start exposing the puppy to its new world. Such as, getting him or her to follow us, go up and down stairs, walk over various things, and also get relatively near to loud noises. By doing this, we are environmentally socializing your puppy to the world while enhancing our bond. We are huge dog lovers, yet incredibly aware in those moments it is essential to concentrate more on being a leader and guide as the new puppy learns about this new world without having the company of its litter mates or mom.

Crucial time for learning
During the first few weeks we are teaching your new puppy boundaries, trust and focus. There is no limit as to what we may incorporate into our approaches. Typically we use certain locations or objects to create an encounter for the puppy. Sometimes a spur of the moment opportunity may present itself in Lexington, Massachusetts. Our choices and imagination are endless. Every exposure and experience builds upon the last one. Through all of this, we thoroughly observe the puppy. We never restrict ourselves to inflexible rules. We try to be more creative, think outside the box, and benefit from activities that unfold before us. Those opportunities are priceless when it comes down to teaching the dog.

Every interaction with the new puppy is a teaching moment. We often think of it as an early investment in the life of this dog. This is the first time away from his or her littermates and staying with us in Lexington, Massachusetts. Puppies have a small window of time during brain development when they are most impressionable. This is called the imprinting also known as the critical learning period. Puppies learn more during this period than they can learn in a lifetime. The quality and quantity of what they experience will have a significant effect on their future personalities and determine a lot of their “good” or “bad” behavior tendencies. Throughout the imprinting phase, every experience is vital. It is important to build their confidence. The expression ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ does not apply to their early interactions. Because puppies are soaking up every experience like a sponge, we need to stay very aware of all interactions and yet still have fun with our new puppy.

A Well-Mannered Pal
4 to 6 months

A trained puppy is a lot more than just obedient. Knowing how to sit, stay or walk nicely on a loose leash are important things to learn. Good manners, great social skills and a healthy relationship with his or her family are very important. Furthermore, desensitization, exposure to various distractions and situations, along with having the flexibility to fit into a lifestyle in Lexington, MA  is equally important.

Our focus is to raise a puppy with impeccable manners and social skills. We begin by teaching obedience the day we bring them home from the breeder; which carries on as we refine the dog’s behavior. The goal is to have a solid foundation by about 4 to 6 months. We practice obedience, making it a normal request in our day-to-day routine in addition to within each new situation we expose your puppy to. We go from shaping to defining commands and proofing them with distractions, duration and distance. Communication is at the center of our philosophy. Being clear and consistent is key. We limit our words when providing commands. We want your dog to understand what we mean when we give them the command. When we say ‘come’ or ‘here’ we expect 100% response immediately.

Proofing Behavior in a Social World in Lexington, MA
6 months to young adult

Enter the teenage years– adolescence. This is the normal age when many dogs are re-homed or given up to shelters. The adolescent stage can find your sweet pup turning into a monster. That nice pup can be more mouthy and disobedient than you could ever envision. Many owners hope their dog will outgrow unwanted behaviors. Their dog is testing what is allowed and what is not. Allowing a dog to continue rehearsing naughty acts makes changing unwanted behavior more difficult.

Working in the Real World in Lexington, Massachusetts Puppies for sale near me Lexington
We work to reduce any unwanted behavior by instilling boundaries and practicing obedience in high distraction locations. For instance, we practice recalls when your dog is highly distracted maybe chasing something as common as a squirrel. We test and proof obedience in high traffic spots, around barking dogs, near playgrounds and within public places.

As the dog goes through the adolescent stage we continue to challenge the dog by putting it in various scenarios. We think of each situation as a picture. How does that look like to the dog? How does that picture change from day to day or location to location. We are striving to teach a dog how to cope in every new and various setting or scenario. We are raising a puppy that isn’t dependent on continual commands that dictate what he or she should and shouldn’t do. Instead, we desire a dog that can make good choices. Our main priority is to have a well-balanced dog, who will fit into your home.

We continue to reinforce and refine good manners making good behavior a habit for the dog. During this time, the puppy has been staying with the dog trainer in their individual home. Throughout this time, your dog will also spend a few days and nights staying with another family member or close friend. Offering this opportunity, encourages your puppy to continue to be confident and comfortable in new surroundings. This ensures those habits and good manners will stay when he/she goes on to your house in Lexington, MA.
