More About Chelmsford, Massachusetts

Chelmsford (/ˈtʃɛlmsfərd/) is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts in the United States. It is located 24 miles (39 km) northwest of Boston. Besides the city of Lowell on its northeast, it is surrounded by four towns: Tyngsborough to the north, Billerica to the east, Carlisle to the south, and Westford to the west. Chelmsford is bordered by the Merrimack River to the north and the Concord River to the east.

Named after Chelmsford, Essex, England, the town was incorporated in May 1655 by an act of the Massachusetts General Court. When Chelmsford was incorporated, its local economy was fueled by lumber mills, limestone quarries and kilns. The farming community of East Chelmsford was incorporated as Lowell in the 1820s; over the next decades it would go on to become one of the first large-scale factory towns in the United States because of its early role in the country’s Industrial Revolution. Chelmsford experienced a drastic increase in population between 1950 and 1970, coinciding with the connection of U.S. Route 3 in Lowell to Massachusetts Route 128 in the 1950s and the extension of U.S. Route 3 from Chelmsford to New Hampshire in the 1960s.

Imprinting Good Behavior ~Birth to 16 Weeks
Picking up your puppy from the breeder

Training starts the minute a new puppy is in our hands in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Once we pick the puppy from the litter, the very first thing we wish to achieve is building confidence and a bond with this new puppy. We start our relationship having fun while always teaching. Under our close guidance, we start exposing the puppy to its new world. Such as, getting him or her to follow us, go up and down stairs, walk over various things, and maybe even get somewhat near to loud noises. By doing this, we are environmentally socializing your dog to the world while at the same time reinforcing our bond. We are huge dog lovers, yet very aware in those moments it is imperative to concentrate more on being a leader and guide as the new pup discovers this new world without the company of its litter mates or mom.

Most important time for learning
During the initial few weeks we are teaching your new puppy boundaries, trust and focus. There is no limitation as to what we may integrate into our techniques. Typically we use certain areas or objects to create an experience for the pup. In some cases a spur of the moment opportunity may present itself in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Our decisions and vision are limitless. Every exposure and experience builds upon the last one. Through all of this, we thoroughly observe the puppy. We don’t limit ourselves to inflexible rules. We try to become more creative, think outside the box, and benefit from activities that unfold before us. Those opportunities are priceless when it comes down to teaching the puppy.

Every interaction with the new puppy is a teaching moment. We like to consider it as an early investment in the life of this puppy. This is the first time away from his or her littermates and living with us in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Puppies have a small window of time during brain development when they are most impressionable. This is called the imprinting also known as the critical learning period. Puppies learn more during this time than they can learn in a lifetime. The quality and quantity of what they experience will have a substantial impact on their future personalities and determine a number of their “good” or “bad” behavior tendencies. Throughout the imprinting stage, every experience is crucial. It is essential to build their self-confidence. The expression ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ does not apply to their early interactions. Because puppies are absorbing every experience like a sponge, we need to stay very aware of all interactions and yet still have fun with our new puppy.

A Well-Mannered Pup
4 to 6 months

A trained pup is much more than just obedient. Knowing how to sit, stay or walk nicely on a loose leash are very important things to learn. Good manners, great social skills and a healthy relationship with his or her family are paramount. Furthermore, desensitization, exposure to many different distractions and situations, as well as being comfortable to fit into a lifestyle in Chelmsford, MA  is equally important.

Our focus is to create a puppy with impeccable manners and social skills. We start by teaching obedience the day we bring them home from the breeder; which continues as we fine-tune the dog’s behavior. The goal is to have a strong foundation by about 4 to 6 months. We practice obedience, making it a normal request in our daily routine as well as within each new situation we expose your dog to. We go from shaping to defining commands and proofing them with distractions, duration and distance. Communication is at the center of our philosophy. Being clear and consistent is key. We restrict our words when providing commands. We want your dog to understand what we mean when we give them the command. When we say ‘come’ or ‘here’ we expect 100% response immediately.

Proofing Behavior in a Social World in Chelmsford, MA
6 months to young adult

Enter the teenage years– adolescence. This is the usual age when many dogs are re-homed or given up to shelters. The adolescent stage can find your sweet pup becoming a monster. That nice pup can be more mouthy and disobedient than you could ever envision. Many owners hope their canine will outgrow unwanted behaviors. Their dog is testing what is allowed and what is not. Allowing a dog to continue practicing naughty acts makes changing unwanted behavior more difficult.

Testing in the Real World in Chelmsford, Massachusetts Puppies for sale near me Chelmsford
We work to prevent any unwanted behavior by instilling boundaries and practicing obedience in high distraction areas. For example, we practice recalls when your dog is highly distracted perhaps chasing something like a squirrel. We practice and proof obedience in high traffic locations, around barking dogs, near playgrounds and within public places.

As the dog goes through the adolescent stage we continue to challenge the dog by putting it in various scenarios. We think of each situation as a picture. What does that look like to the puppy? How does that picture change from day to day or location to location. We are striving to teach a dog how to adapt in every new and different environment or situation. We are raising a puppy that isn’t depending on continual commands that determine what he or she should and shouldn’t do. Rather, we prefer a dog that can make good decisions. Our main priority is to have a well-balanced puppy, who will be comfortable your home.

We continue to reinforce and refine manners making good behavior a habit for the dog. During this time, the puppy has been staying with the trainer in their personal home. Throughout this time, your puppy will also spend a few days and nights staying with another relative or friend. Giving this opportunity, encourages your puppy to continue to be confident and comfortable in brand-new areas. This ensures those habits and good manners will remain when he or she moves on to your house in Chelmsford, MA.
